CLYDEBANK’S Midnight League for young footballers is moving venue for the first time in 10 years to encourage more to take part.
The weekly kickabout – which is in the afternoon while keeping its original “midnight” name – is to move to St Peter the Apostle High from Friday.
Organisers said the last 10-week run of the sporting sessions attracted about 30 people and they hope the new home will build numbers.
St Peter’s hosted the first Midnight League in 2008 but it’s been at Clydebank High ever since.
Jo Meiklejohn, a youth outreach worker with Working4U who run the sessions for the council, said he hoped to convince pupils at the school they could spend time with friends rather than just ending the week at 3.30pm on a Friday.
He said: “It’s important that though the event is seven-a-side football, young people who don’t want to play football should equally believe that it’s a safe venue for them to spend time with friends and kick about a ball if they wish or just chat and watch.
“We’re hoping that it’s easier for them to attend an after school event rather than go home, get comfortable then think later on in the evening, ‘Am I going to go the Midnight League?’”
The league welcomes teams of seven but individuals and smaller groups are welcome to turn up and join in. Girls and boys aged 12 to 18 in West Dunbartonshire are welcome, with any abilities.
There is a zero-alcohol policy. Each £1 session runs from 3.30pm to 5.30pm until October 19.
