A new top that remembers the last time Clydebank FC were in the Premier Division has sold out within hours of going on sale.

The new retro shirt, designed by Glasgow brand Finnieston Clothing, is inspired by the 1987/88 Bankies home strip - fondly remembered as the ‘zigzag’ top - worn during the last season the team was in the top division of Scottish football.

Although it won’t be worn by the players on the pitch this season, that hasn’t stopped fans scrambling to get one of the limited-edition shirts.

Speaking to the Post, Commercial Director Bill Abraham explained the team’s recent Scottish Cup heroics, when they reached the fourth round only to be cruelly knocked out in extra time, helped get the ball rolling on the idea as Finnestoun reached out.

He said: “They’d seen our cup exploits and got in touch.

“They wanted to do something related to the Bankies and the ‘zigzag’ top fitted in really nicely with a theme they were thinking of doing.

“So that was the inspiration.”

Ross Geddes, founder of Finniestoun Clothing admits it is his company’s first foray into any sort of football clothing but given they usually do workwear-inspired designs, Clydebank offered the best opportunity to help take that first step.

He said: “Everybody that works within the brand are big football fans.

“Our brand is a workwear brand, but we have always wanted to enter a casual aspect of things.

“We couldn’t just bring out a football top.

“But because we are an industrial-inspired brand, and we take a lot of inspiration from the shipyards and in particular Clydebank. We’ve brought out John Brown’s t-shirts over the years.

“So, for us, it was a perfect in. There is a bit of coercion there because of Clydebank’s industrial tradition.”

Ten per cent of sales made directly at Finnestoun will be donated back to the football club and Bill was quick to praise the fashion team.

“It’s been fantastic. The guys are football guys, and we are hoping to do future collaborations with them,” Bill added.

Thanks to the success of the jersey, there are already plans to do a Christmas collection as well as a summer range next year.
