Yoker Athletic boss Gordon Robertson admits his sides pre-season results don’t mean a whole lot to him, as long as his players are putting in promising performances.

The Whe Ho returned to action last weekend as their schedule of friendlies got underway with a 2-2 draw against the clubs development side.

That was followed up on Saturday with a 3-3 draw against Third Division outfit Port Glasgow with Lewis Smith, Shaun Gallacher and a trialist finding the net.

Yoker are set to meet with Kilbirnie Ladeside, Thorniewood, Hamilton Accies and Vale of Leven ahead of the competitive action getting underway at the end of the month and Robbo is feeling hopeful ahead of the big kick-off.

The Yoker boss was happy with how his side performed on Saturday despite letting a 3-1 lead slip in the final stages but accepts that can happen when making a number of changes throughout the game.

Speaking to the Post, he said: “We came back in for pre-season with a few new faces in and the squad has been healthy in terms of numbers and quality.

“It’s always good at this time of the year when anything is possible and you have the league to look forward to and a decent pre-season schedule of matches.

“I was really pleased with how we played on Saturday, I thought in the first half we were outstanding and moved the ball well and our fitness levels looked good and we made good decisions with the ball.

“We had loads of good moments, particularly in the first half, and in the second half we had chances we should have put away so looking at the bigger picture I’m really pleased.

“Because of the size of the squad, we had to make eight changes in the second-half which can be disruptive and not something you do in a normal game, and if it’s not something you do in a normal game then you can’t get too focussed on a result. You’ve got to look beyond it.

“Whether we win a pre-season friendly or not isn’t the issue, I’d rather play well and not win than play poorly and win the game. We were good to watch on Saturday and I want us to be that way and for the players to enjoy it.”

Yoker host First Division title hopefuls Kilbirnie Ladeside on Wednesday - kick-off is at 7.45pm - before Thorniewood United are the visitors on Saturday with that game kicking off at 2.00pm.

Elsewhere, Clydebank also shared six goals with the opposition in a pre-season friendly when they travelled to Threave Rovers on Saturday.

Callum Graham, Thomas Collins and Liam McGonigle all netted for the Bankies as they followed up Tuesday’s 8-0 victory over Newmains United with another three goals.

Gordon Moffat’s side host Rutherglen Glencairn on Tuesday evening, kick-off is at 7.45pm, before they take part in the Renfrew Tournament this weekend alongside Renfrew, Ashfield and Kilsyth Athletic.

The action gets underway at New Western Park at 12.00pm on Saturday when Frew face Kilsyth before Clydebank take on Ashfield at 3.00pm.

Sunday will see the two losers battle it out for third place before the final at 3.00pm.
