THE importance of a transport system in Clydebank which supports and complements the new developments under way in the town has been stressed by the town’s MSP.

Gil Paterson has highlighted a joint initiative by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and West Dunbartonshire Council to make the case for transport improvements in the town, including the redevelopment of the bus stance.

Mr Paterson, who wrote to the SPT about the bus stance, said he was delighted with the response from the chief executive Gordon Maclennan, who referenced the building work under way at Queens Quay.

The MSP said the redevelopment has the potential to attract an increased number of people to the area over the coming years and strengthens the case for improving transport links and services between Queens Quay and existing public transport facilities in Clydebank.

Remarking on the plans, Mr Paterson said: “These are exciting times in Clydebank as the area enters a period of regeneration, it is vitally important that we grasp the opportunities presented in order to maximise the benefit for local residents, businesses and visitors alike.

“A transport system which supports and complements the new developments in the area is crucial.

“The major works at Queens Quay with the new health centre, care home and innovative district heating system as well as new housing will be a major asset to the area.

“The plans will open up the waterfront from Clydebank to Old Kilpatrick with a mixture of public parks, walkways and cycleways, cafes and bars.

“A new bridge over the River Clyde will bring opportunities for existing business and the possibility of attracting new businesses.

“We need a public transport system which matches our ambition.”
