PLANNING bosses have recommended the approval of a new petrol station in Clydebank despite “significant” objections.

Councillors will decide tomorrow, Wednesday April 24, if the planned new petrol station at Clyde Retail Park will go ahead.

Asda has proposed to build a 24-hour, eight filling position petrol station, which will include an automated “pay-at-pump” system, a jet wash, an air and water dispenser, and an unmanned control room.

The planning application submitted to West Dunbartonshire Council states that the site will be built on an area currently used as a car park for Clyde Retail Park, with Argyll Road to the West, and Livingstone Street to the south.

Residents of nearby Linnvale and beyond have raised concerns regarding traffic congestion and the likely increased risk of accidents.

One person told the council: “The level of traffic in Linnvale continues to be a major problem. I imagine the proposed position of a petrol garage would increase this volume of traffic further. This would not only cause frustrations for drivers and pedestrians alike but would also increase the risk of accidents.”

Another added: “I am concerned about the congestion that is already at the roundabout and feeder roads. The roundabout is far too small for the amount of traffic, and tail backs already sit on the roundabout at peak times.

“The layout going in and out of the retail park at the proposed site is very unclear and I have been witness to people driving in the wrong way and to many near misses when people are turning right onto Livingstone Street.”

And Linnvale and Drumry Community Council also strongly object to the proposal on behalf of many residents.

Their primary concern was the “nightmare” of a roundabout at Livingstone Street and Argyll Road that already causes difficulty for drivers turning in and out of Linnvale, which would be made worse due to the position of the petrol station.

However, there have also been 66 letters of support submitted by Asda following a customer consultation event in the Clydebank store.

The points of support included that the petrol station is a much needed facility for the area, it will allow customers to purchase fuel as part of their shopping trip, and it will be used by people who are already in the area shopping so will not create additional traffic or journeys.

Conditions if plans are approved include construction work being carried out at specific times and the presence of any unsuspected contamination that becomes evident being brought to the attention of the planning authority, and an electric charging point installed prior to to the petrol station opening.
