West Dunbartonshire and Argyll has ranked second out of 13 police divisions for social distancing breaches after cops arrested seven people.

The area followed Greater Glasgow, where eight arrests where recorded, and came fifth for the number of fixed penalties issued, with 42 people locally fined.

The statistics were released on Friday, as Police Scotland urged people to stay at home.

In the Argyll and West Dunbartonshire policing division, 233 people have been moved on by police, while 13 have been given a recorded warning and five have been taken home by officers, since March 27.

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone, speaking alongside First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, warned people not to become complacent of the social distancing measures as the country enters its fourth week of lockdown.

He said that there were powers in place to penalise people who venture out without any reason, as 500 fixed penalties have already been distributed across Scotland.

He thanked the vast majority of Scots who had adhered to the measures, but urged people to refrain from house parties or meeting up with friends.

Chief Constable Livingstone said: “I am pleased to report that the vast majority of people in Scotland are in fact continuing to do the right thing during this acute health emergency and thank them for that.

“The social distancing legal requirement to stay home is the best way to protect the NHS and the best way to save lives.”

The top cop stressed how important it was to stay home, adding: “Please, please, stick with it.

“Obey the law, continue to play your part, and lives will be saved.”
