A COMMUNITY hub has been put forward as a new base for the Port Glasgow town centre post office.
Inverclyde Community Development Trust's 7 1/2 John Wood Street office is being proposed as a replacement for the counter which was lost when Spar pulled the plug following a shop fire.
The store had been closed since March last year and shop bosses recently confirmed that the business would not re-open.
Now Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld believes he may have found a solution which would enable customers easy access to services again without having to travel elsewhere.
Cllr Ahlfeld said: "At the community development trust board meeting I suggested that John Wood Street would be a suitable building to house the Post Office.
"I has been used as a polling station and Port Glasgow library was also temporarily housed there.
"I know people have been looking for a suitable premises and this s right in the middle of the town and it's handy."
Mr Ahlfeld says he has been in touch with fellow independent and ward councillor Drew McKenzie to pitch the proposal.
He said: "I contacted Drew and he said he thought it was a really good idea."
Councillor McKenzie told the Telegraph: "It would be excellent if all parties could come to some arrangement.
"It is very valuable to have a post office in the town."
When the Tele approached the Post Office, a spokeswoman was tight-lipped about the future location of a sub-post office.
She said: “We are disappointed that CJ Lang resigned from operating Port Glasgow Post Office.
"The decision to close this counter was taken solely by CJ Lang.
"We do have an interested retailer for Port Glasgow and talks are at an early stage.
"We know how important Post Office services are to a local community and are working as hard as possible to restore them to the area.
"In the meantime, the nearest alternative branches is Dubbs Road.”
