MEMBERS of a Drumchapel family have been sharing their love of the great outdoors online in the hope of encouraging youngsters and parents alike to venture beyond the walls of their home.

Keith Gallagher and his three sons Lewis, 15, Kayden, 10, and Leo, six, initially created an Instagram account to document their adventures during lockdown.

Now the page, called bushcraft_not_minecraft, has amassed more than 2,000 followers.

The family has also been asked by an outdoors group to promote their work in the local community.

Dad Keith told the Post: “I’ve always had an interest in the outdoors as I’m ex-military, and I wanted something that I could do with my kids as I ended up losing my job.

“We were looking for something cheap and something simple such as building a den or a walk in the woods, which might encourage adults to do things with their kids.

“At the start of the first lockdown, we saw nobody at all during our walks or even kids playing outside.

“My boys wanted to learn a bit more about things like bushcraft, camping and fishing so they started looking at other pages which were posting about it.

“It grew so quickly. They’re now being sent free stuff and they’re being asked to represent companies.”

Keith and his sons now act as ambassadors and rangers for Bush Kiddz, a community created to share ideas, resources and knowledge that will build confidence in parents and kids alike to venture into the outdoors.

He added: “Bush Kiddz was one of the accounts the boys had been following from the beginning, and after they saw what we were doing they asked us to start spreading the word and get people out there.

“They, like us, want to give parents and guardians the confidence to get up, get out and go wild. I would love to see this gain some movement in our area.”
