A DOCTOR who grew up in Clydebank enlisted the help of his young daughters as he wrote a children's book to raise funds for charities close to his heart.
Paul McNamara penned 'I Love My Teacher's Guts,' which tells the tale of schoolgirl Sally, who is shrunk down to the size of a microscopic particle after a science experiment takes an unexpected turn.
After finding herself trapped inside her teacher's body, Sally is given a real-life lesson in anatomy as she makes her way through the bloodstream and organs to reach the intestines, which are her only means of escape.
Paul, 39, wrote the book in collaboration with his children – nine-year-old Isla and seven-year-old twins Emily and Freya – during the Covid-19 lockdown.
He told the Post: "I wanted to show them that anything is possible with a little dedication and belief.
"My hope is to introduce children to the wonderful world of anatomy and inspire the next generation of medics, scientists and lovers of books."
Paul is also using the book to raise funds for a number of worthy causes, such as foodbanks and mental health charities, to support those who are suffering during the cost-of-living crisis.
He is no stranger to seeing the daily hardships that those in poverty have to deal with.
"Some proceeds from the book are being donated to local foodbanks and mental health charities, as I work as a GP serving socio-economically deprived populations.
"So many families are struggling at the moment and I wanted to show my girls that a little kindness can go a long way."
Paul, who is married to paediatric nurse Charlene, graduated from Glasgow University with a first-class honours degree in anatomy and went on to study medicine, qualifying with distinction and commendation.
The educational author has previously written books called Mastering Medical Exams and Case-based Discussions in Medicine.
He also enjoys working in remote and rural medicine and is an advocate for the Reach Foundation, which encourages and supports school pupils from socially-disadvantaged backgrounds to enter tertiary education.
The paperback edition of I Love My Teacher's Guts is priced at £8.99 and can be ordered online at amzn.eu/d/6an9jiX.
