Clydebank Health Centre is set for a new bus service after SPT announced plans to stop there as part of a new contract.

The transport partnership revealed they will be replacing the X22 Port Glasgow to Clydebank route which had recently been withdrawn by operator McGill's.

In March, McGill's explained they planned to remove commercial services across nearby Inverclyde, with the X22 route being impacted.

Now, SPT says a new temporary contract operating between Port Glasgow and Clydebank has been awarded, offering a wider range of connections - including the new health centre between Monday and Friday.

David Wilson, chair of SPT Operations Committee, said: "Once again, SPT has stepped in to provide services when commercial operators have decided to withdraw without any thought to those communities across Renfrewshire and Inverclyde who rely on those services most.

“Where they have been able, SPT has managed to amend and adapt current contracted services to help provide some solutions to ensure that people will be able to travel when and where they need to.

"However, make no mistake, this is not sustainable for the long-term future of bus services in our area. SPT cannot continue to step in as operators continue to withdraw services.

“There needs to be a long-term plan to tackle some of the deep routed issues and problems facing the bus market.

"We call upon Transport Scotland to urgently look at these issues and to work with SPT to try and tackle these."

Last month, McGills said the reason for the shake-up in services was due to rising costs and the retraction of Covid-19 recovery funding from the Scottish Government which has helped support local services since the start of the pandemic.

Ralph Roberts, CEO of the McGill’s Group, said at the time:  "From April 1, bus operators in Scotland will no longer receive the ‘Covid recovery’ financial support from the Scottish Government which has aided delivery of local bus services since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

"We will therefore revert to having to cover all of our operating costs independently.

"This is no criticism of Scottish Government – the funding to date has allowed more bus services to run than would otherwise be affordable."
