WEST Dunbartonshire’s only municipal golf course could be shut for good, it has been revealed.

Over the weekend, golfers at Dalmuir Municipal Golf Course were sent a letter from West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) stating that it is considering reducing the size of the course or closing it permanently.

The local authority notes the reasoning behind this decision is “rapidly reducing budgets”.

In the letter, seen by the Post, it states that the income WDC receives - including its funding from the Scottish Government - is “significantly lower than the cost of delivering its services”.

It goes on to add: “The council is operating in an extremely challenging financial environment. Rapidly reducing budgets mean the options available to us [WDC] to continue to provide services in the same way are limited, and we must take action to save money while still delivering the vital services our residents rely on."

Dalmuir Municipal Golf Course first opened in the town nearly 100 years ago in 1928.

The proposal to downsize/close the course comes ahead of WDC’s budget-setting meeting which will take place on March 6.

Councillors will be asked to discuss the potential closure as well as a range of other money-saving options in an effort to plug WDC's budget gap.

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokesperson said: “A meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council will take place next month to discuss the budget for the upcoming financial year.

“No final decisions will be taken on any of the options presented until this meeting.”
