A QUANTITY surveyor who mowed down a woman in an incident branded "truly shocking" by a judge has been jailed for 16 months.

Jatinder Singh, 24, was behind the wheel of his red BMW when he hit the victim in Clydebank on May 21, 2021.

Singh, of Knightswood, was in the area having gone to pick up his brother from a nearby pub.

The sibling had appeared to have got into a row with the 37-year-old woman outside the bar.

She was then standing in the road on Chalmers Street when Singh went on to plough into her hurling the victim into the air leaving her badly hurt.

The incident was captured on mobile phone footage.

Singh later claimed what occurred was due to a "momentary lapse of concentration" while he was checking his sat-nav.

He appeared at the High Court in Glasgow where he pleaded guilty to a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

His lawyer had urged Lord Harrower not to jail Singh.

But, the judge told Singh: "You made no attempt to slow down or to change course.

"The resulting impact and its consequences were truly shocking.

"Members of the public witnessing the incident were visibly distressed."

The court heard the woman suffered a broken nose and a fractured ankle. She later had an infected leg as a result of what happened.

Lord Harrower remarked a social worker compiling a pre-sentencing report noted Singh showed "high levels of minimisation" to what he had done.

He was also said to be "somewhat unperturbed" when discussing the crime.

The judge told him: "It seems you made no effort to report the matter to police before you were arrested."

Singh was told there was "no appropriate alternative" to custody.

The jail-term was cut from 18 months due to the guilty plea.

Singh was also banned from driving for four years.

Tony Graham KC, defending, said university graduate Singh was an "otherwise commendable individual" who was "more mature" than when he committed the offence.
