The council has unveiled a six-week programme of free summer holiday activities for children.

The School Holidays Involve Nurture & Engage (SHINE) initiative is aimed at keeping youngsters fit and entertained.

This year, West Dunbartonshire Council has added activities specially designed for families with children who have additional support needs.

In collaboration with 29 local organisations, a variety of SHINE activities are available to families.

Participants will also receive free snacks and lunches in July and August.

Additionally, through West Dunbartonshire Foodshare, more than 600 family lunch bags will be distributed to assist families.

Activities suitable for up to 18-year-olds will take place across the area, focusing on fun social experiences, learning and wellbeing activities, and health and environmental education.

Recommended activities include girls and boys football camps, gaming and virtual and reality workshops, nature walks and crafts, arts activities for P1 and S1 transition pupils, gymnastic run stay and play sessions for under fives, Olympics-themed family sessions, and breakfast and lunch clubs.

Laura Mason, chief education officer, said: "I am pleased to see such a wide-ranging programme of activities which will be a great benefit to all our pupils and families offering children and young people fun-filled days to keep them busy over the holidays.

"This year’s programme will support 12,000 children and young people and provide 15,000 lunch and snacks along with 600 family lunch bags.

"I’m sure these will prove to be really popular with young people, parents and carers and I would like to thank all the organisations who are working in partnership with us to provide these fun activities."
