A Clydebank man caught with a hatchet has been put under a curfew for nearly four months.

Maurice O'Connell previously admitted having a hatchet when caught by police and claimed it was for a camping trip a week later.

The 24-year-old returned to Dumbarton Sheriff Court on June 18 more than a year after sentencing had been deferred for more information on him. And it has been nearly four years since the original crime in 2020.

O'Connell had pleaded guilty last year to having the potential weapon in Smith Crescent, Clydebank, on July 7, 2020.

He had been stopped around 1.30am that night and he admitted he had a hatchet, which officers found in the waistband of his trousers.

A previous hearing was told he told police he was going camping a week later, something he repeated to social workers after he was convicted.

When he returned to court last week, defence solicitor Phil Lafferty said a restriction of liberty order was the "only feasible disposal" for the case.

O'Connell, previously of West Court, Clydebank, and now of Kilmarnock, was ordered to stay at home between 7pm and 7am for the next 15 weeks by Sheriff Shirley McKenna.
