West College Scotland recently participated in the UK government’s Turing Scheme, securing significant funding to provide students with international education and training opportunities.

The Turing Scheme, designed to support Global Britain, offers life-changing experiences by enabling students to study or work abroad.

Three of the college departments from the Clydebank and Paisley campuses—Hospitality, Creative Design, and Motor Vehicle— embarked on trips that have broadened their educational horizons and practical skills.

Twelve Creative Design students travelled Limassol, Cyprus.

At Cyprus University, they collaborated with local students and staff, developing a design brief, delivering presentations, and visiting architectural industry partners.

They also explored the island to understand diverse creative concepts in design.

Design lecturer Lola Paterson said: "The trip to Cyprus has truly transformed lives.

"Our students had the opportunity to experience a different culture first-hand, exchange ideas, work in groups, build portfolios, and explore a new country."

Student Donald Lapsey also shared his excitement.

"Engaging with the culture and visiting museums like the Paradox Museum sparked new ideas for future projects," he said.

"Observing the teaching methods and design approaches in Cyprus was truly enlightening."

Ten Motor Vehicle students from the Clydebank campus, guided by staff members, also engaged with their long-term partner, A’Technical School in Limassol.

They participated in lessons, work experience, and cultural activities, including attending the local boat show.

Curriculum quality leader Patrick McGroarty said: "Our students were eager to learn new skills and experience a new culture.

"The Turing funding provided them with a life-changing opportunity to enhance their skills, immerse themselves in a new environment, and participate in valuable work experiences."

Student Shelby Dowall, who served as a student mentor, added: "This trip was an amazing learning opportunity, and it has significantly boosted my confidence."
