A Ukrainian Independence Day event in Victoria Park is set to commemorate Ukraine's relationship with Scotland through performances, sports, and workshops.

The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) have been working with Friends of Victoria Park (FoVP) to create a fun-filled day on August 24.

The bodies have previously collaborated on events that commemorate the relationship between Scotland and Ukraine.

A bench was unveiled in April this year which features the colours of the Ukrainian flag and is dedicated to all those affected by the Russia - Ukraine War.

Kateryna Campbell from AUGB Glasgow said the event is open to everyone and is hoped to be a way to bring people together.

She said: "We decided to host a family fun day on Ukrainian Independence Day as an event open for all.

"It’s a way to commemorate the national day but also give back to the community because Scotland and Glasgow welcomed so many Ukrainians.

"About 24,000 displaced Ukrainians are living in Scotland currently, I think around 3,000 in Greater Glasgow. They came here having lost people and their homes and everyone has been very welcoming.

"This day is a way to give back and bring communities together. So everyone's welcome to join. People can meet each other and families can have a really nice day out."

A small stage will host singers performing Ukrainian songs providing an opportunity for the organisers to host a one-minute silence to remember those who have lost their lives in the conflict.

The day will then be followed by sports activities including a rugby session by the Glasgow Warriors team, tug of war and volleyball games.

Kateryna is hoping people will have the opportunity to mingle with one another and be wowed by the talents of the magician, take part in some fun face painting and enjoy the various workshops and activities in place.

Kateryna added: "We are planning to have a few Ukrainian performers sing some Ukrainian songs and then we'll kick off with the sports activities. The Glasgow Warriors are planning to attend and they're going to do a couple of drills with the kids and the adults.

"There's volleyball and we're most likely going to have tennis as well. We're just kind of in the process of discussing it with the people who will be providing yoga sessions, football sessions and having a fire engine there, which will be fun for the kids.

"There’s a magician there, face painting as well as Ukrainian art workshops. So lots of fun things planned."

The event will run from 12pm to 4pm in Victoria Park.
