Councillors have begun to congratulate the new Provost of West Dunbartonshire following the election at a council meeting.

Councillor Karen Murray Conaghan has been selected today (August 28) as the new Provost becoming the first female in the council's history to do so.

Murray Conaghan's colleagues have begun congratulating the new provost on X.

Cllr Jonathan McColl, who recently resigned from the SNP last week, posted: "Very proud to have voted for my friend and colleague Cllr Karen Murray Conaghan, now elected as @WDCouncil's first female Provost. @theSNP now Chair the Council, with Labour remaining as the political Administration. A new Leader of the SNP Opposition will be elected by the SNP group in due course."

Cllr Lauren Oxley wrote: "Congratulations to West Dunbartonshire's first female provost Karen Murray Conaghan. There's no better person for the role- absolutely delighted"

The now-former group leader of the SNP opposition was put forward after news broke earlier that two Clydebank Waterfront councillors had quit the Scottish Labour Party.

An article by the Daily Record revealed that councillors Daniel Lennie and June MacKay had handed in their membership card last week.

This meant there was no longer a Labour majority within the council and the SNP then put forward their candidate.

A new leader of the opposition is said to be elected in due course.
