A CLYDEBANK school has become the first in West Dunbartonshire to win a prestigious award.

Skypoint School in Faifley, which caters for children with additional support needs, has been awarded Gold by UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting School programme.

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school.

Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life.

Michelle McEwan, headteacher of Skypoint School, said: “I’m very proud that Skypoint School has achieved the UNICEF UK Gold Award.

"This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire school community, especially our staff, pupils and their families.

"I would like to thank everyone involved for your continued commitment to ensuring children's rights are at the heart of our school."

The award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s planning, policies and practice.

A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

Martin Russell, RRSA programme director, said: "Skypoint School has very much impressed us with the way in which children learn in an environment that encourages and empowers them to make a difference both at home and around the world."
