Teachers in West Dunbartonshire will be offered professional learning opportunities designed to help children and young people experience high-quality learning, teaching and assessment.

It comes as part of the council’s Excellence and Equity Improvement Plan which aims to give pupils opportunities for success and was detailed in a report to West Dunbartonshire Council’s Educational Services Committee.

The plan sets out the priorities for 2024-2026 which includes a consistent and robust approach to tracking pupils' progress, achievement and attainment to ensure children and young people receive targeted support.

Since 2017/18 funding has been secured from the Scottish Government’s Pupil Equity Fund (PEF) which is directly allocated to schools with the specific goal of addressing the poverty-related attainment gap.

Full funding is expected to continue until 2026. Schools will regularly monitor performance data with a focus on equity outcomes which will enable teachers to track progress and make informed decisions about resourcing and targeted intervention to support pupils with information shared between schools to build continuous improvements.

Laura Mason, chief officer of education services, said: “It is really pleasing to hear of the varied and comprehensive support offered to our pupils to help them reach their full potential with the confidence and resilience to thrive once they have left school.

“The extensive work being undertaken by education to support children and their families is to be commended.

“We are committed to ensuring all pupils, regardless of their circumstance, are given equal opportunities and supported throughout their education and that support is available even when they leave school.”
