ARTWORK created by talented youngsters from across West Dunbartonshire has gone on display in Glasgow’s West End as part of a new competition.
The winners of the first-ever Jackie Marno McGoldrick Prize were unveiled at an exhibition held at The Alchemy Experiment on Byres Road last week.
The competition was launched earlier this year by Callum Stewart in memory of his mum Jackie who was a much-loved art teacher at Clydebank High School.
It was open to school pupils under the age of 18 across West Dunbartonshire but Callum has revealed that he has plans to expand the competition next year.
He said: “There was about 60 to 70 people there and around 20 of the kids. It went so well. Mum’s former colleagues came along as well as her friends.
“I hadn’t seen some of them since the funeral so it was good. Teachers from the different schools that entered came as well which I thought was just lovely.
“None of the winners knew at all. One of them, Matthew, had no idea and was very shocked. He said he wants to be an architect and his drawing was of a tenement building showing all the lines and curves, it was fantastic.
“First prize went to Frankie Thom of Clydebank High School and he got £200 of art vouchers. There was also three second place prizes.
“These went to Leah Harkiss, Matthew Mckenzie, and Rebeka Sherry, all of St Peter the Apostle High School.
“They all got £100 of art vouchers. It means they can continue their artist experience with those supplies.
“It’s all about supporting the next generation of artistic talent. We want to make this as big as possible.”

Entries for the competition opened at the start of May and closed at the end of August.
Callum previously explained that this time frame was chosen as pupils sitting their SQA exams would have finished their submission by this stage.
The competition also remained open to students who were in their sixth year and would have left school before August.
Each of the winners artworks will remain on display at The Alchemy Experiment until November 14.
They feature alongside other incredible creations by youngsters who came out in the ‘top 20 per cent of all submissions’.
Jackie Marno McGoldrick taught at Clydebank High School for 19 years and was known to be loved by pupils and staff alike.
The 61-year-old sadly passed away on March 28 last year after battling cancer.
Jackie studied art and graphic design at Cardonald College before going on to Jordanhill College where she became a teacher.
She then worked full-time in Clydebank where Callum said her job became “the love of her life” and he hopes her legacy will continue to inspire students to believe in themselves “for generations to come”.
