In this era of austerity West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) elected members should perhaps decide not to replace the outgoing chief executive.
They may also rationalise, and ponder why directors of departments are required for the provision of public service.
None of these officials are accountable to the electorate.
Voters can remove councillors but they cannot be rid of officials.
There is an over abundance of middle management at WDC and they should be culled in order to provide and maintain front-line service workers.
