So it seems we’re getting the Commonwealth Games.

After months of speculation, after lots of talk about money, indeed about the fact that there’s no money, it's finally going to happen.

There are a lot of details to be sorted, including some of those money ones, alongside little things like when and where. The answer to the first is sometime in the summer of 2026, which is hardly a surprise, but really, when?

And where? Well Glasgow, obviously, but where in Glasgow?

Which brings me to the point of this column about these slimmed-down Games. We all had a great time in 2014 but the athletics are not going to be at Hampden in 2026. Where then?

The answer is Scotstoun by all accounts!

You might wonder, as we all are, but actually, this will probably work.

Scotstoun Leisure Centre and Stadium was one of the venues for the Games in 2014. It didn’t have any really high profile sports but it's got indoor and outdoor courts and it's got a stadium with a running track. And that’s the big clue.

At the moment Scotstoun serves as the home of the Glasgow Warriors during the winter rugby season and has a capacity of just under 10,000 spectators.

But some of the stands sit on the ends of the running track and during the summer those stands are taken away and the track is used by running clubs.

Temporary stands that go round the outside of the track will almost certainly work and will increase capacity as well. It's never going to be like Hampden but it will probably all surprise us.

Now all that work and there will be quite a lot, and all those spectators during the Games themselves, are bound to be a bit disruptive. There’s going to be no doubt about that, and the organisers are going to have to think long and hard about local residents, about traffic and about changes that may or may not become permanent.

I’m a glass-half-full kind of person so I’m going to be looking at this and asking myself, how can we use this opportunity to make things better for the local community? What can be changed that stays changed for the longer term?

The Games are coming and almost certainly coming to Scotstoun. Let's make the most of that and let's look for the things that will be for our benefit. Roll on 2026!
