LAST Thursday, October 1 was the date of the eagerly awaited rugby match between Clydebank High School and St Peters Apostle S1/S2 teams.
What a day it proved to be, as the sun blazed down on the Clydebank RFC pitch at Whitecrook, the teams arrived with a huge amount of excitement ahead of this Clydebank Derby.
The boys began with some training before the game to sharpen up their tackling and rucking skills, for what would be a physical encounter. The game consisted of three 10 minute periods.
The first period saw St Peters Apostle take an early lead with some string running from Jamie Russell and Aidan Robb. Clydebank High fought back into the game through some nice offloads from Scott Kerr and tries from Craig Bain.
The second 10 minute period saw the defences of both teams improve. On the Clydebank High side, Nathan Macdonald and Christopher Bishop lead the line with some superb tackling.
For St Peter’s it was Adair Crumpton and Callum Craik who made some key tackles to halt the Clydebank High players. Going into the final 10 minute period the Voy twins showed some quick feet to have a hand in a Clydebank High try. St Peters hit back with a try of their own, with some accurate passing from John MacMillan and Peter Ferguson.
The game finished seven tries a piece, a fair result after the efforts of both sides. On the Clydebank High side, massive thanks must go to PE teacher Mr Leahy who gave up his time come and support the boys, along with pupil Ben Francis who has assisted with the after-school program at the school.
From St Peters Apostle, a huge thanks to Mr McMurray who made the fixture possible and Logan Cope, a pupil at the school who helps coach at the after-school club. Finally Stephen Leckey, the Clydebank Rugby Development Officer, would like to thank all the parents who came to support the players and with more games scheduled in the future, this is an exciting time for rugby in Clydebank.
