CLYDEBANK AND DISTRICT BOWLING ASSOCIATION The CDBA Gents Short Carpet League commenced on Wednesday, October 7. Clydebank and Yoker, the two clubs many regard as favourites to win the title, both achieved home wins. Yoker had a comfortable evening with a convincing win against Dalmuir, while Clydebank beat Albion by the narrowest of margins. Yarrow got off to an excellent start by winning at Old Kilpatrick. The other two matches saw victories for Singer and Radnor Park.
The results from Week 1 can be summarized as follows: Clydebank 6 Albion 4, Yoker 10 Dalmuir 0, Singer 6 Scotstounhill 4, Victoria Park 4 Radnor Park 6, Old Kilpatrick 3 Yarrow 7. The initial league table is as follows: 1. Yoker 10 points, 2. Yarrow 7 points, 3= Clydebank/Singer/Radnor Park 6 points, 6= Albion/Scotstounhill/Victoria Park 4 points, 9. Old Kilpatrick 3 points, 10. Dalmuir 0 points. Clydebank have purchased a new carpet this year so it will be interesting to see how their campaign progresses over the season. They have another home match this week, this time against early leaders Yoker. The Week 2 matches in the District League are due to be played this evening (Wednesday) and are as follows: Albion v Radnor Park, Clydebank v Yoker, Scotstounhill v Old Kilpatrick, Victoria Park v Dalmuir, Yarrow v Singer. The Week 3 fixtures scheduled for Wednesday 21st October are as follows: Dalmuir v Albion, Yoker v Victoria Park, Old Kilpatrick v Clydebank, Radnor Park v Singer, Scotstounhill v Yarrow The following initial matches in the CDBA Senior Short Carpet League were due to be played on Monday, October 12: Yoker v Old Kilpatrick, Victoria Park v Singer, Clydebank v Scotstounhill, Dalmuir v Radnor Park, Albion no game. The Week 2 matches are due to be held on Monday 19th October and are as follows: Albion v Yoker, Old Kilpatrick v Victoria Park, Scotstounhill v Radnor Park, Singer v Clydebank, Dalmuir no game.
The CDBA Dominoes League was also due to start on Monday, October 12 with the following matches played: Albion v Dalmuir, Radnor Park A v Clydebank, Singer v Radnor Park B, Victoria Park no game. The Week 2 fixtures scheduled for Monday, October 19 are as follows: Dalmuir v Singer, Clydebank v Radnor Park B, Victoria Park v Albion, Radnor Park A no game.
SCOTTISH INDOOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION The Gents National Indoor Leagues finally got underway on Saturday 10th October. In Division 1 South, Dumbarton got off to a fantastic start with an excellent 79-72 away victory at East Kilbride. The Whiteinch Gents also had a terrific start to their Division 2 West League campaign with a narrow two shot victory against Glasgow at the Queens Park venue. The final score was Glasgow 76 Whiteinch 78. In Division 2 East, Allander were beaten 92-64 by West of Scotland at Shawfield. The fixtures for the Week 2 matches due to be held on Saturday, October 17 are as follows: Division 1 South – Dumbarton v Auchinleck, Division 2 West – Whiteinch v Prestwick, Division 2 East – East Fife v Allander.
The Week 2 matches in the Ladies National Indoor League were contested on Saturday, October 10. After their great away victory last week, the Whiteinch Ladies duly won their home match against Arbroath, the final score being 83-71. This result means they are top of Premier Division A on their own, being the only team with maximum points. In Division 1 Section D, the results of the Allander v West of Scotland and Dumbarton v Fintry matches have not been reported to SIBA. However, the results from the previous (Week 1) matches are now available: Dumbarton 79 Lanarkshire 93, Fintry 85 Allander 62. There are no league matches this coming weekend as the Ladies National Singles competition is being held.
] Meanwhile, the district’s senior citizens played their initial matches in the Senior National Indoor Leagues on Saturday, October 17. In the big clash at Bearsden, Dumbarton triumphed over Allander after a strong finish. The final score in the Senior West Section B match was Allander 53 Dumbarton 57. The result of the West Section C match between Whiteinch and Coatbridge is not yet available. The Week 2 fixtures due to be played on Saturday, October 17 are as follows: West Section B – Dumbarton v Ardrossan, Paisley v Allander, West Section C – Lanarkshire v Whiteinch.
It will be a busy weekend for the Seniors as they participate in some of the National knockout competitions on Sunday, October 18. The initial rounds of the Singles, Pairs and Triples are all being contested. In the Singles Preliminary Round, Jake Condy of Whiteinch will play against Dumbarton’s Brian Neeson, the match being played at West of Scotland IBC. John Harvey will be representing Allander and he will play Charlie Boyle (West of Scotland) at Coatbridge IBC. In the Senior National Pairs, Jimmy Young and Bill Taylor (Allander) will be up against Coatbridge in The Preliminary Round. Whiteinch’s pair of Mick McDermott and Tommy Clark Senior will take on Jim McConnachie and Thomas Turnbull (Cumbernauld), this match also at West of Scotland IBC.
Meanwhile Charlie Cassidy and George Lunan of Dumbarton will play their Preliminary Round match at Coatbridge IBC, against Falkirk’s Alexander Ness and Jim Vallance. The National Triples knockout competition will also commence on Sunday, October 18. The Whiteinch trio of Ian Todd, Billy Adams and Jake Condy are due to play Falkirk at Coatbridge IBC. Meanwhile, in the Preliminary Round game at West of Scotland IBC, Dougie McLean, John Batey and Archie Pollock will play against Dumbarton, whose triple has not been finalised. All these Preliminary Round matches will commence at 10am.
The initial few rounds of the Ladies National Singles will be played on Saturday, October 17 and it will be an early start as all the matches are at Arbroath IBC. Lorna Cameron will represent Whiteinch and she is up against Carla Banks of Garioch. Janice Grant of Allander is due to take on Mary Legge (Aberdeen) and Dumbarton’s Ann Jardine will play Lauren McGowan (Fintry). These matches commence at 10.00am. Finally, the National Ladies and Gents Two Bowl Pairs knockout competitions were played on Sunday, October 11. Full details will be provided in next week’s column.
GLASGOW INDOOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION The Final of the Glasgow Indoor Bowling Association’s Mixed Top Ten competition was contested on Sunday, October 11 at Dumbarton Indoor Bowling Club In the semi-finals last weekend, the scores were as follows: Allander 6 Fintry 2, Blantyre 4 (+59 shots) East Kilbride 4 (+58 shots). Despite Blantyre’s narrowest of victories in their semi-final they were in unstoppable form against Allander in the final, and went on to record an 8-0 victory to lift the trophy.
