Yoker co-manager Tommy Montgomery hailed his side for bringing an end to their five-game losing streak with an emphatic 6-1 victory against Royal Albert at McKenna Park on Saturday.

The Whe Ho fell behind in the first minute, but refused to let that faze them and goals from Jamie Waddell, Gary Bissland, Greg McBride, Chris Scott and a double from Gregor Cree sealed the rout.

Yoker’s management had previously complained about the side failing to take their chances, so Montgomery was pleased to see players make no mistake on this occasion.

He told the Post: “We lost a goal in the first minute but the heads never went down. I have to say that has never happened even when the results haven’t gone our way. The boys have always had a great attitude, so they stuck with it.

“6-1 probably flattered us slightly, but I think we were by far the better side. The two late goals were the icing on the cake. It’s a real boost for us as we continue in the fight against relegation.

“In previous games we had created chances and hadn’t taken them and got punished for that. On this occasion when we got the chances we took them and that made a real difference to the flow of the game.

“This time getting in front the other team had to come out and play and that allowed us to go and hurt them on the counter attack.

“The big thing is to make sure we stay in the game and make other teams come out and play because we have real pace up front, so we want to be able to go and get in behind. If we get in front then we have a good chance of pushing on.”

But with two tricky encounters coming up against promotion challengers Shotts Bon Accord and current league leaders Gartcairn at Holm Park, doing so will be easier said than done.

Montgomery, however, remains confident his side will give as good as they get.

He added: “We now have two really tough games against teams going for the league.

“They are fighting it out for the title but we have everyone back from injury now, we have a settled squad and we’re having the chance to work with them now so we’re still very optimistic we can win the games. We just need other results to go our way.”

Kick-off this Saturday against Shotts is at 2pm.
