DRUMCHAPEL United will be looking to go one better than their near-neighbours from Clydebank after stunning seasoned Scottish football observers by winning a place in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
The West of Scotland Football League First Division side earned their place after knocking FC Edinburgh out of the competition on Saturday.
Former Stirling Albion midfielder Alex Docherty scored the only goal as United, coached by John Black and Adam Hopes, secured a 1-0 win over the League One promotion hopefuls on a sticky surface at Maryhill FC’s Lochburn Park – belying the four-tier gap between the sides.
United’s reward for their giantkilling feat wasn’t quite the plum tie they’d hoped for when the fourth round draw for the tournament was made on Monday night, but Black and Hopes will fancy their chances of making further progress after being handed a trip to Borough Briggs to face Elgin – a venue where Clydebank won in a replay last season on their own memorable journey to round four.
The tie will take place on the weekend of January 21.
Before then, though, United are back to the bread-and-butter business of gathering league points in their bid to climb the First Division table.
That mission continues with a trip to New Petershill Park this Friday night, December 2, to take on Rossvale (KO 8pm).
Meanwhile, Clydebank, who had no game at the weekend, are back in action this Saturday, December 3 when they welcome Kilwinning Rangers to Holm Park. Kick-off is at 2pm.
