YOKER Athletic manager Gordon Robertson was left gutted for his troops after their late heartbreak against Benburb in the South Challenge Cup.

Two goals in the final six minutes from the Premier Division side secured their spot in the hat for round two in a game which the Whe Ho had chances of their own.

Goals from Hamish McKinlay and Jordan Bow were enough for the home side to progress but Robbo was full of praise for his side.

It’s been a mixed bag in terms of results to start their league season with two wins, two draws and a defeat from their opening five games, but he has been delighted with performances and urged his troops to build on Saturday’s showing.

Speaking to the Post, he said: “It looks like a comfortable win for Benburb but that wasn’t the case, we caused them lots of problems and held our own.

“I was really gutted for the lads because we were really good and defended our box well.

“I was really pleased with the way we tried to play football, we kept the ball really well and defended robustly and looked like a good team. Given their physical advantage, and we have quite a small team, we coped with what they had to throw at us.

“In cup ties it’s about winning so credit to Benburb for getting the job done, it was just a bit of frustrating it happened so close to the end with such a scruffy goal.

“We’ve got to keep in perspective that it was another good performance from us and build on that.

“It's been a good start in terms of performances – we drew with Lanark with the last kick of the ball after being 2-0 down and then we’ve had good wins over Larkhall and Bonnyton.

“Our only defeat so far has been against Caledonian Locomotives when we were the better side by miles and lost to a penalty.

“It’s been a decent enough start and we just need to build on it. Now the midweek games are out of the way we can maybe focus more on what we are doing throughout the week.”

Yoker host Craigmark Burntonians this weekend with the visitors still yet to register a point in the league table.

It’s easy to see where it’s going wrong for the Ayrshire side as they are shipping on average nearly six goals a game, though they did run Neilston close last Wednesday by losing 4-3.

Robertson admits results will come for their opponents – he just hopes it doesn’t start this weekend.

He explained: “They ran Neilston really close who will be a good team in the league this year,

“You can’t tell anything until everyone has played each toher so the message for the players this week will be to not look at their first few results and think that it’s going to be a gimme.

“They need to pick up their first point somewhere so we need to make sure it isn’t us.”

Kick-off at Holm Park on Saturday is at 2:00pm.

Elsewhere, Clydebank eased into the second round of the South Challenge Cup with a 4-0 win at Ardeer Thistle as Callum Graham put his name in the Bankies history books.

The forward netted the fastest hat-trick in the clubs history with his first-half treble between the 29th and 34th minute putting the visitors in a comfortable position at the break before Thomas Collins scored a penalty to seal the result.

It’s back to league business for Gordon Moffat’s side this weekend as they look to maintain their 100% record in a top of the table clash with Johnstone Burgh.

The Johnstone side are undefeated themselves with three wins and three draws from six outings and will be looking to burst the Bankies bubble.

Kick-off at Keanie Park on Saturday is at 2:00pm.
